    1967 Park Brake Handle

The silver band on the end of my 67 Park Brake handle (grip) has worn to a dull grey. If I were to purchase a NOS handle is it a big deal to change out the black grip? Any help most welcome.

    Thanks,
    Jace Holt

I've done this. I had the brake mechanism out of the car. You need to pull the black release knob off of the 3/16" stem. (glue it on later) I needed to get the stem loose so that the knob was beyond the knurled handle, so that it could be twisted. This can be accomplished by removing a roll pin in the chrome part of the mechanism. Then the knurled handle will slide, with resistance, off of the metal chrome brake handle. Before you purchase a new handle check to see how accurate it is compared to an original. I have found the knurling etc. to be slightly different, and it would be found if the car is NCRS judged. I believe many restorers just paint the entire handle black, as this was one of the ways it came based on the serial number for '67.

There is a fellow in the DRIVELINE that reconditions these if you are so inclined. Don't know the cost or quality...... Believe he is Jeff Saltz?????

      Jace,
Jeff Saltz was at the Bloomington show. The 67 handles he rechromes looked very good. The new repro's now out on the market will not pass judging ....if that is your intention. Good luck.....

Jace - First of all the NOS handle would have to be a '67 or '68 (maybe '69 or '70 handle) to be identical to the grip on your '67 handle that I'm assuming is original.

Second, I agree with Rick on the examples Jeff had at Bloomington. He has done a nice job overall and the plastic plated surfaces look good and since it's your original handle it will be looking like it came from the factory (actually better). Pete
