I have a working coil that is correct for the C3 it goes to. The trouble is it is a chipped and grimey, old story. I was wondering however if the board had any experience with powder coating the metal case on one of these? Could it be done safely and effectively with the tower and winding still intact. I understand the temperature to set the powder is about 400 degrees. This particular coil is not available as a restoration part so I'd rather not destroy it unless someone has had success with this. It seems to me a powder coated gloss black finish on this would be much more durable than paint. Thanks in advance.

Re: Charles, I'd bet a ton of frogskins...
Charles,
I would be afraid to subject an ignition coil to 400 degrees.
Your coil will look great if you sand it with 320 grit paper, prime, sand with 400 grit paper and spray with your favorite gloss black from rattle can. If you want a more high temp. paint, omit primer and spray with gloss black engine enamel.
When completely dry, polish with 3M Swirl Mark Remover Part no. 051131.
As the old dude on the cooking show used to say: "I gar-o-tee".

Polish??!! Swirl Mark Remover??!! I musta' missed those old factory photos that showed those guys polishing those coils. Shoot, I would just spray that thing with a light coat of rattle can paint, stick it with a fork and call it done.
Forget that powder coat idea...if you have an original coil that's good, I wouldn't go taking chances to make it overly purty.- Top
