    Oil Canister

    Dear Members,

I bought a used oil canister from a local wrecking yard for $20 yesterday. My 67 didn't come with one. Does the "M" bolt on bottom come out or is it fixed? What is the correct finish for the bolt(silver cad, black)? Thanks Much!

    Re: Oil Canister

I am really stretching for memory here but IIRC the bolt goes all the way through the canister, has a keeper, umbrella and spring, in that order. I don't know of any non-destructive way to remove the bolt.

have removed many canister bolts over the years. you may or may not destroy the keeper but if you do, the unit is still functional. you'll just have to remember that the M bolt will drop down out of the cannister when changing filters if you destroy the retainer. put the unit in a vise and tap the bolt thru the stellate shaped retainer/washer. they usually don't break in two, just need a little tweaking to re-form the fasteners configuration on re-install. good luck, mike

        Justin,

The bolt in the Oil Canister has a natural finish. Some rebuilders plate this bolt BUT they also have a problem with leaking after the bolt is plated. Clean it with a wire brush and use satin polyurethane clear.

        Regards,

          If...

you mangle the keeper during removal of the fastening bolt, there's a pretty simple fix. Put a cut-off wheel on your Dremel tool and cut a fine, low-depth, notch in the OD of the bolt in the area where the keeper was. Now, install the bolt through the cannister and snap an E-clip onto the bolt in that groove. You're done!
