You didn't mention what year and it isn't in your profile, but if it's a '67 or later, there's a fusible link at the horn relay power buss connection, and they make a fair amount of smoke when they let go (and protect the harness). If it's pre-'67, you probably have more extensive harness damage.- Top

Re: TOWED!! Need advise FIRE
I fried the fusible link at the starter on my '67, which supposedly? protects the wiring and what else? Well it's useless, not only did the fusible link get cooked but also my clock and amp gauge were fried as well. Had to get the whole dash cluster rebuilt.- Top

Re: TOWED!! Need advise FIRE
This happened about 3 years ago. I had a new Lectric Limited wiring harness with the fusible links installed in the engine bay. I don't think there are fuses to back a failure of the fusible link. The car was running fine. Someone here made a post asking if anyone had a picture they could post of where the wire connections on a '67 horn relay were arranged.
So trying to be helpful, I went into the garage with my digital camera, unhooked the battery cables and unbolted the horn relay from the grounded radiator support so I could move the relay out to where I could get a good picture of it. Took a couple shots and went back into the house and posted the picture for a member here. I had forgotten to bolt the horn relay back up to the support.
About two weeks later, I go back into the garage to start up the car, not remembering that the relay was not bolted back up. Also during this time, the relay had sagged down so that the red hot wire screw was touching the grounded metal support. So I hook up the battery cables and.....POW, sparks flying and smoke from the starter motor. I immediately unhooked the battery but it was too late. All I did to the harness was cook one of the fusible links, so I got some identical fusible link wire and replace it. The rest of the damage to the gauges I already mentioned.
It just goes to show it's really like they say......."No good deed goes unpunished"!!!!- Top
