    4spd tranny I.D. help

I just got a 4 spd trans. Believe it to be a muncie. I want to install this in my brothers 58 in place of the original 3 spd. The case markings are as follows:
    case side cover: 3884685
Tail: 3846429, on the mail housing it says US PATent #3088336. I need to order from C.C. a shifter kit and 4 spd mounting bkt. But don't know which shifter kit will work. Either the "4 spd shifter with linkage kit" or the "stock style hurst shifter handle and shifter kit". Any help would be appreciated.

Don, it is a Muncie. 3846429 is from a 64/65. 3884685 is from a 66/67/68. I can't find 3088336. If I read my doc. correctly this is what I find. I'm sure others will chime-in.

as an after thought while looking in CC's catalog, will I need the mount adapter plate for the 1962 4 spd installation Pt NO. 531304 as seen on page 107 of CC's catalog?

Yes, you will need the mount adapter, a couple of more questions, on the side of the case with the patent number are another series of numbers, the last three will be either 704, 325, 010, 660, or 661. This will give a lot more info as to the year of the trans. Also, look at the input shaft, are there grooves (rings) in the splined area, and if so, how many?

Bill, two groove rings on input shaft. No other numbers on the side case with the US patent no.

Two grooves would make it a wide ratio, '66 and up. Hurst has kits, most likely it's a '66-67-68 box as those were the years that used the side cover you have and also the years with the studs coming out of the side cover to a ttach the shifter arms on, rather than using Bolts going thru the arms into the shifting arns in the trans. To order the proper kit if using a Hurst, you will need to give them the year of the trans you are using (67) and the year of the car it is going into. It might also be possible to use a stock Corvette shifter from '64-65 if you prefer, but I'm only about 80% sure that will fit perfectly.

Thanks Bill, this info helps. I will talk to the tech guys out at C.Central and see what they think will work.

Depending on what you want the final product to look like, you may also want to consult Summit Racing if your intent is to go the Hurst route. The hurst shifter handles are bolt on's and there are "cheater" handles available from Corvette vendors to attach an original-looking handle to a hurst below. Judges will (usually) catch it, but it will fool the casual onlooker.
