    Belt Squeal

Starts first when the AC is turned on...subsides...then continues again upon acceleration through the gears. Recently started to hear while under normal driving. After adjusting the tension on both the AC and the Alternator...it's less now, but there's still a slight squeal (even with AC off). Belts have approximately 7k or 8 years use on a '74 BB...no PS. With symptoms persisting after proper adjustment, is it replacment time? If so, any comments on how well the belts from Quanta hold up? With NCRS Judging guidelines in mind, would the recommendatin be to use the Quanta belts for judging and "others" for everyday service? Thanks.

I am thinking your belts are extremely dried out or you have a worn pulley somewhere or your belts are worn out or they are still not tight enough. Also, you need to locate the one that is making the noise. If the belt starts to sit at the bottom of the pulley grove then the pulley is shot or the belt is wrong size. Pulley that is not worn symetricly will do that also a bit (repro pulley?). Hard to tell without knowing the history about the situation. If it was fine and only started doing it because of storage then I would consider new belts or belt dressing to soften them up (use very sparingly).

      Ray,

Are you sure the squeal your getting when you accelerate through the gears is coming from the belts and not a chirp from the tires when you change gears . I would take Terry's suggestion and replace the belts with new ones. Before putting the new belts on I would clean the pulley grooves with alcohol or prep-sol to make sure any contamination in the pulleys is removed before installing the new belts.

Are you sure its the belt? A water pump or pully can sound similar. Don

I have heard it is not wise to drive on Quanta belts. The points hit won't amount to much but a brake down on the drive to the meet will ruin your day. Unless of course your a trailer queen guy, then the drive from trailer to display area should be a piece of cake.

I have the Quanta correct belts on my '69. I don't drive it alot, but I do drive it. So far I've had no problems.

Do not put belt dressing on the belts. When you do finaly replace your belt's all that belt dressing has to come off. That stuff is miserable to clean up, it gets in the pulley grooves and makes a mess. I would just change out the belt's and get them good and tight. JMHO.

I plan to investigate all of your recommendations. My thinking right now is that I'll probably purchase new belts service belts, keeping the Quanta thought on the shelf for now. Thanks for all your insights!
