If any 1971s received the 70 style cap, then it would have been very early ones. As far as I know, none did, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility.
Even if your car had received the 70 style cap, it could very well have been replaced with the 71-74 style somewhere along the way. The 70 style cap, GM #3974743, was discontinued from SERVICE in 1973 and replaced, for SERVICE, by the 71-74 style cap, GM #3994339.
The 70 style cap has a "scalloped" perimeter and silver sinc finish (like 63-69 style caps), but is stamped "sealed" or "non-vented" (I forget which). The 71-74 style cap, GM #3994339, has a completely round perimeter, has a dichromate (gold) overplate over the zinc, and is stamped "sealed".
The 70 style cap is not very easy to come by.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Gas Cap 71
Some 1971s got the 1970 style cap with a plastic label stating "caution open slowly." I don't have the TIM&JG with me at the moment, but there are drawings of all three 1970-1972 style caps in there, and approximate break points for the various styles. At least the break points we were aware of a decade ago.
That manual may be long on the tooth, but it is still a great source of information, even if I do say so myself. Of course it costs a little more than asking questions on this board does.Terry- Top
