    Postage problems

    Hi all,

I've tried to order the zinc plating set, black oxide set and zinc (gold/red/green) spray cans from Eastwood but they don't seem to ship via boat and therefor can't send it across the ocean. Would someone care to help me out here by buying it for me and re-send it via boat? Ofcourse I would cover all the additional shipping cost (and maybe a reasonable fee).

    The products are
    zinc plating system: http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/pro...eyword=plating

    Black oxidation system: http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/pro...eyword=plating

    Zinc spray cans (gold/red/green): http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/pro...eyword=plating

    thanks in advance,
    Rob.

    Re: Postage problems

    Rob,

If you search the Archives, Caswell zinc and black oxide systems seem to be preferred to the Eastwood Systems. You may have better luck with Caswell.

Also, the "golden cad" spray systems don't look that great. Perhaps you would do better finding a local plater (yes, even in the Netherlands) for your item, or consider sending it to a Stateside plater such as Steve Gregori at www.brakeboosters.com

I'll be happy to help you out on this, Rob. But, perhaps we should talk first because you might be buying Eastwood products you don't really need...

        Re: Postage problems

        Rob,

You might try this site if you want to do zinc or copy cad plating on other then very small parts and bolts:

I use the Caswell Copy Cad and Zinc system with yellow chromate, and have used their zinc blackener. You can do bright or dull silver cad finish, or gold dichromate, black or even olive drab with the right chemical dips. The kit includes a pretty comprehensive manual on all their plating systems. I think the air shipment restrictions are only on the chemical dips and not the kit.

I think the Caswell system is a little more versatile then the Eastwood kit.
I initially got a 3 gallon kit although have used it mainly as a 1.5 gallon kit for parts up to the size of a master cylinder cap. But it depends on what you want to plate and the size of the parts.

I've tried the Eastwood Black Oxide system, and it is pretty good and will blacken zinc plated parts as well steel parts, even though they say it's not for plated parts. I just brushed it on a zinc plated bolt full strength and it came out nice. The Caswell zinc blackener only works on fresh zinc plating, and not very well if used as recommended.

I've also tried the Eastwood Golden Cad finish, and wouldn't recommend it. It is a paint coating, looks like paint, and it scratches easily. There's nothing like a dichromate finish, which is a chemical dye on zinc or cad.

If you're thinking about doing carburetor pot metal, don't even think of plating it with zinc or cad. Just bead blast, pickle it (Caswell Pickle #4 is good), and then dip in the yellow chromate. Zincate (for aluminum priming) also helps even out the finish. For the steel parts, you need to plate for that bright gold finish.

And talk to Jack about it.
