I just remove an old spin on oil filter adapter that wouldnt accept a GM filter and there was no by pass valve. I have a new wix adapter but it says to use with the by pass valve. I believe this part is discontinued and Ive heard the 68 up style wont fit. Anyone know where to purchase a by pass valve for a 64? Thanks

Re: 64 Spin On OIl Filter Adapter

The 56-67 style oil filter adapters which include the bypass valve are GM-discontinued. However, the part is available in reproduction from sources like Dr. Rebuild. However, I've NEVER seen a spin-on conversion adapter that was used in CONJUNCTION with original adapter. Usually, these adapters REPLACE the original adapter. It is true, however, that you can't use the 68+ spin on style adapter on earlier blocks as the machining is different.
If you could post a picture of the Wix conversion adapter that you have, perhaps we could figure it out. Also, a copy of the instructions, especially including any diagrams that may be provided, might help, too.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 64 Spin On OIl Filter Adapter
Joe, The adapter I took off was a two piece construction with no bypass provision. Th first part bolted to the block and the second part, with the filter mating surface, was held on by only a pal nut! Im glad I finally decided to change this adapter! Anyway the new WIX adapter instructions assumes you still have the original bypass valve and the WIX adapter bolts over the original bypass valve and seats on the gasket just as the original canister would. Its really a better engineered adapter letting you use the orignial bypass valve. I found a bypass valve #5573837 and received it today. Its probably a reproduction but it marked "AC MADE IN USA 5573842".- Top
