    67 Seat Belts

    Dear Board Members,

Could someone tell me what the date letter E stands for. My early 67 has dates 41 E 66, the 41st week of 1966, model # C 10 Hamill 1967. Also was Hamill the supplier for other makes than Corvettes.

    Thanks,

    Don

    Re: 67 Seat Belts

Someone said on this forum a while back that the E was a section of the Hamill plant where the seat belt was made. Many had told me it was for Friday but their was almost all E's that I had seen.

      Don,

Lots of differing opinions on the "E" in the archives. Some say it was for Friday, others, the seat belt assembly line, or a model code. Has anyone seen 67 seat belts with other then an E code. Maybe they only did Corvette seat belts on Fridays, or maybe they only stamped them on Fridays for a weeks shipment.

I don't think we ever got this resolved.

Hamill was the supplier for other GM cars and I believe other manufacturers. You see that same RCF-65 seatbelt buckle (with a different insert) as deluxe seatbelts on other GM models. Robert C. Fisher, a GM employee, held the patent on the RCF-65 and later RCF seatbelt buckles.

        Re: 67 Seat Belts

        Here's how mine read:

        Female:
        HAMILL 1967
        MODEL # C10

        Male:
        HAMILL 1967
        MODEL # C10
        15E67

If someone can decipher this, please do so.
        Thanks,
        Tony

            Tony,

Those are the 15th week of 1967, and I'll bet that male belt is on the passenger side. The model is correct for 67 lap belts.

My original belts for a June 29, 67 conv were only date stamped on one belt, the passenger side male belt and the date was 7E67 (7th week 67). I thought this was odd, and when I refurbed them, I looked at each label in a bright light and under a magnifying glass, looking for any remnants of the date stamp. Nada, either they used disappearing ink or they were never stamped.

Don, 22E76 would be 1976 replacement belts. There are lots of replacement belts out there as there was a big lawsuit or lawsuits in regard to defects in the original belt buckle, called "inertial unlatching". I put a set of 1976 buckles on my original 67 belts, and they are identical to the 67's but have a little stronger pawl spring.
