After cleaning all of the grime from the heater box and fan motor, it appears to me that the finish of the box itself is simply a "natural" dull black plastic with what appears to be semi-exposed fibers (tan color), with no paint applied. Is that the acceptable way to leave it?

That is the original finish. You should see evidence of sealer around the mating surfaces also.Dick Whittington -

Definitely found the sealer you're talking about - the grey stuff (dim-dim?) plus the black shiney goop applied here and there. Thanks Dick.Comment
