Fuel sending unit on 68 convertible

Anybody know a way to test a fuel sending unit before I reinstall? I'm trying to find out if the "always on empty" problem is in the sender, the wiring or the gauge. Since I have the tank out now I think I should test the sender first.

Use a digital meter set to measure resistance in ohms. Connect the two leads from the meter to the two posts on sending unit where the wires attach. Raise the float arm and the meter should show around a 90 ohm resistance. Then lower the float arm and watch to see the resistance go toward zero ohms.

If your gauge is reading empty but the sending unit checks out correctly, that means that there is a short to ground somewhere in the path from the gauge to the sending unit or that the gauge itself is bad.

      Shannon,

Thank you. I was really hoping it could be done before re-installation.
