    looking for classic car insurance

hi, after driveing my 69 vette last year and paying a ton for regular insurance, id like to switch to classic insurance.

couple of things im looking for...

    they insure the michigan area

no age requirement for drivers (cars in my dads name, but im only im 19, found a few places that are 25+ only)

they will insure a car under any quality condition. (its not a junker, but its far from dealership condition)

im not looking for anything with unlimited miles, since i dont think i even put 500 on it last year.

any suggestions would be appreciated. the main thing im looking for though is some place that will insure some one as young as i am.

Scroll down and you will find a thread on this exact subject.
It was just discussed at length on June 14.

i just took a look at some of those. from what i can tell, hagerty wont even insure me because my vehicle isnt in a restored condition.

i need to contact the 3 other ones and see what theyll tell me.

doesnt look like i can edit previous posts...

J.C. Taylor is a no go. min driver age is 25

Grundy is probably a no go. my car isnt in "excellent original or restored condition"

ACI looks liek my only real possibility. i dont see anything on there site about a drivers age requirement or a car quality requirment.

you're dead in the water on Classic Car Insurance if the car in question is the only one available to you (thus, a daily driver) - the classic car insurance underwriters will require proof of an insured vehicle assignable to each licensed driver in the household, and the classic car in question must be in addition to these vehicles - it must be proven to be "extra".

not to mention your age, as you have already encountered, puts yo out of the preferred classic car insurance rate class. I was 19 a few years ago (depends on how you define a few) and I can see their point . . . . .

haveing the extra cars is no big deal.

my daily driver is a beater sunbird, my dads got a nice F-150, and my mom has an Explorer.

if only i could convince the insurance company that i dont beat on the car at all. hell, i only had the tires break loose the first week i started driveing the car last year.

oh well.... ive gotta talk to ACI and see what they say.

Lance - it's not YOU, you could be the most responsible, trustworthy, careful driver in the planet - it's the overall experience with 19 year old male drivers that have gone before you (including me - sorry buddy) that have shown the insurance companies that, on average, a severe collision or perhaps liability claim is more likely than not. Take this self-test: do you have any guy friends who have not had a crunched fender or worse in the last two years?

I wish you luck, it DOES seem a bit much to pay normal daily driver 19 year old male rates on a car that is driven 500 miles a year - if your annual premium was $500, that's a dollar a mile.

your dad could insure the vette with a collector car insurer as the driver, but they would never even schedule you as a permitted driver, I would bet. Meaning that if something bad did happen while you were driving it, you might be without insurance coverage for the damage or claim.

ya thats the problem im seeing.

the cars in my dads name anyways, but just haveing me on the insurance as a driver is whats killing me.

im afraid to see what the bills would be if the car was in my name.

                i got a quote for a 95 Z28 with full, 150 bucks a month. a Z28 is no where near what a corvette is...

i should call up AAA {where my current insurance is} and see if they have any kind of limited driveing insurance or collector car ins.

you might also look for a company that allows you to "lay up" the car for the winter, like what most of us who ride motorcycles in the Northeast do, the fire and theft stays but the liability is off for the winter - helps keep the overall premium lower.

                    brings back bad memories

Lance, insurance is the reason I don't still own my first vette. I bought a 1958, in 1978, for $3500.00, owned it for 11 days, the insurance was 1900.00 for six months! I get to see it about twice a year and it still hurts!

Lance, I had the same problem and so did everyone here. it ain't fair, but that is insurance.

I cured mine by going with liability on my second one only. Paid cash, had no requirements to insure it other than liability, and bet on myself to not screw the pooch. Paid $2100, saved $1000 on (no) insurance, no loss.

Did the same with the next one. Paid $3100, passed on the $1500 per year, a bunch of years later I'm way ahead.

If something did happen, I'd probably fix it myself and then the insurance would screw me again since they wouldn't pay me the same as a shop.

Insurance is betting against yourself. But unfortunately, it is cheap compared to the price of the cars today.
