Tach Boot & Headlight wire clips on 62 vette

    Hi Guys

I have 2 questions. On my 62,the headlight wires that run along the nose of my vette are held with clips. I need to install 5 clips. These clips are glued in. What will work to hold these in place? Someone told me a product called REN. But it is about $80.00 for a quart. I don't want to spend that much. All the other clips are held with screws except these.

Now i'm also trying to install the Tach boot. I already ruined one boot. The small hole is very tight on the boot. How do you get the serrated nut on the Tach cable through that little hole? It seems impossible. When I tried to stretch it, the rubber ripped apart.

Your help is really needed here.....Thanks...John

    John -

In the plant, we used a 2"-long pointed/tapered hollow cone tool to install speedo/tach cable grommets on the cable - the large end was just slightly larger than the ferrule on the cable, dipped it in Joy soap solution, and pushed the tapered tool with the ferrule inside through the hole in the grommet, then removed the cone tool. I have one laying around somewhere that I made years ago from thin sheet aluminum.

Wish I had one of those cone tools! But I put mine thru on the bench with a long socket. I heated up the rubber in hot water, lubed up the socket and pushed it thru the hole and followed it with the cable end.

After I got it all in and ready to drive the cable snapped at the tach!!! Now I need to try and put it thru the rubber in the car.

        John...

For mounting the clips to the nose, I used bonding adhesive and taped the clips in place until the adhesive set. JB weld epoxy would serve just as well

          Hi guys

Thanks for your help. I'll try an epoxy for the clips and the ideas for the Tach cable boot.I hope the Boot opens up easy enough. I'll try to warm it up and use liquid soap.

          Thanks.....John

Not sure of my memory, but isn't the tach end smaller than the distributor end?

              Hi Chris

Yes it is, but it is still large. Once I get it through, i'll have to slide it to the other end.The hole in the boot is about 5/16" and the Tach side ferrule is about 3/4"..It will still be hard to get it through.I'm working on making the tapered piece of metal to get the tach ferrule through. Hopefully this weekend.

              Bye...John

Heating (with hot water) the boot and using soap whould also help. Swearing at it helps too.

Now about that ferrule or retainer for the boot on the firewall. See Paragon # 3752. Haven't figured that one out yet.

In the archives I asked the same thing about a year ago. Response and what is in the AIM is that the retainer was not used. Boot is glued in place. I used black 3M.

I still have some new GM tach boots. They came with a retainer with 3 short fingers that snapped into and held the boot to the large hole in the firewall.
