    Coil + Terminal Connection, 66 L-79

I've reviewed various posts in the archives regarding the 2 wires that are supposed to be connected to the + terminal of the ignition coil on a points ignition system. (My car - 66 L-79 non-TI ignition). Upon inspection of my coil connections I found only one wire (from resistor) to the positive side of the coil. The one from the "R" terminal of the starter solenoid is missing. My understanding is that the "R" terminal wire is to provide a full 12 volts during engine starting. As my car starts easily my question is: Is this wire necessary? and if so, should it be a direct single wire connection from solenoid to coil and what gauge should the wire be? Thanks - Doug

    Doug,
My '65 has two wires connected to the + side of the ignition coil. They are both crimped into the same spade terminal.

Both wires are black body color with a pink tracer. The '63 Shop Manual and AIM wiring diagrams shows both wires to be 18 gauge.

I'm wondering if there is a wire on the R terminal of your starter relay, or is the terminal blank? If there is a black/pink wire connected; that's the one that used to go to the + side of the coil.

You're correct that the wire is used to provide full battery voltage to the coil for starting purposes. When the ignition switch is in the run position, the voltage on the coil is less because the current is running through the ballast resistor.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your '66.

    Regards,
    Gene

      Doug,

My '66 L79 has two pink wires, both 18 gage, exiting the wiring harness about in the middle of the firewall. As you say, one is from the resistor and the other from the solenoid. They extend about 8" or so toward the passenger side, looped back towards the the driver's side, and wrapped to the harness. They both have side terminal connections and attach to the positive coil terminal. Perhaps a previous owner had a breakerless system installed and removed the other pink wire. Hope this helps some...
