SBC water leak at intake gasket

I have a water leak comming from between the intake and the head at the left front corner. Seems to be comming from between the intake and gasket. A drop forms about every 2 seconds and runs down the front of the motor even though the engine has not been started and the system hasn't yet been pressurized. In fact I was just filling the rad with water to test for leaks when I noticed the water dripping on the floor.

Engine is a 350 in my '59. I replaced the Torker intake with a GM 461 alum intake I picked up. Intake was sent to a machine shop to get cleaned out, inspected and repair a few threads.

The head and intake surfaces were cleaned spotless. The intake was torqued down properly in steps and in the proper sequence. New bolts were used with Fel-Pro thread sealer. All bolts started easily by hand to center the intake. I used Hi-Temp RTV gasket maker at the front and back instead of gaskets. New Fel-pro intake side gaskets used with Fel-Pro gasket sealer between head and gasket. I did not use any sealer between intake and gasket.

Where did I go wrong? Warped intake? Should have used sealer between the gasket and intake? Haven't started taking it apart yet, I was hoping the Corvette Fairy would come in the night and wave her magic wand but I think the 350 is keeping her away.

Diagnossis and remedies greatly appreciated. Pat G.

You will need to remove the intake again, and buy a new set of gaskets. Turn the intake over and you will see that there is corossion in the intake around the water ports. Put some RTV around all 4 water ports and reinstall the intake.

I had the same problem with my 1965 396 except it was on the left side rear and leaked into cylender #7 through the intake port. My hart went into my throat when, during a compression check, coolant came out of the spark plug hole. The fix was exactly what Kent suggested.
