Oh, the joys of trying for two days to get on to ask a question and finally arriving. Of course, I may never get back to see any replies, but ..... First, I am aware that 59-62 AIMs call out a part number ending in 4656 as the fuel pump du jour. BUT both the April 1, 1959 and April 1, 1960 Parts Books call out the 4656 for the 1958 Corvette (and others) and list the fuel pump for the 1959 and 1960 Corvette as the 4657. I suspect that the first response is that the 4656 was "used on the line" and that the 4657 was a "service replacement". For those who would advance that theory, please turn to pages 222 and 223 of Noland's book. On page 222, there is a factory photo of a 1958 chassis which I believe shows the normal 4656 fuel pump configuration - inlet at the back, outlet at the front. On page 223, there is a factory proving ground photo of 1960 #2269, taken at the Michigan PG on January 15, 1960, approximately 8 days after this car was manufactured - please note that BOTH inlet and outlet are located at the REAR of the pump, which I believe to be a 4657. Can we hear from either original owners or owners of original cars as to what pump is in their 1959-up cars. Thanks - I think 2272 is going to get a 4657.....
