    I Jinxed My Car

This morning I posted another comment on my "Dealer Name" post of the 26th saying that I wasn't accustomed to reliable sports cars after having owned only British cars. Well that did it. I put the top down on my '74 and headed off for a two hour ride in the country. About a mile or two from home steam poured out around the hood. I pulled over and anti-freeze was all over the left side of the engine compartment and steam was coming up in the general area between the master cylinder, engine, and firewall. The temperature was normal and no white smoke was coming out of the exhaust so I turned around and went home. From under the car it looks like anti-freeze is leaking from the head gasket running down the oil filter and landing on the exhaust pipe. I can not see any other place where it could be coming from and there is no water in the oil. I'm hoping for a head gasket and not a cracked head or block problem. Well at least this should be easier and less costly to fix than a V-12 XKE. Bill

Could the leak source be from a freeze plug that has ruptured?

      Bill,

I'll bet its just a freeze plug. If it's the rear one on the side you may be able to replace it without pulling the engine, but then one of other ones will rust through next.

You should lose the Jag, your Vette will be must happier...

I sold the Jag before moving to New England so the Vette has sole claim to the garage. As to the freeze plug, I hope your right but the anti-freeze sure looks like it's coming from the gasket. Next week I'll bring it up to operating temp and get the car up on a lift for a better look.

I suggest you borrow a cooling system tester that presureized the system when the engine is cold. Any good repair shop should have one. Just remove the rad cap, attach the tool and pump up the system to 10 to 12 pounds. You should then be able find the leak with a non running cold engine.

          good Luck
