I have a 71 Coupe and am looking for the correct dimensions for mounting the dealer installed luggage rack. The assembly instruction sheet I have is for a 76 and shows a dimension of 4.17" from the rear edge of deck to the center of the rearmost mounting hole. The 76 however has a urthane rear bumper so the deck ends much shorter than the 71.

Re: Luggage Rack Mounting Location
Your not going to get much response here on a question like this. People here will tell you that there is no position that it correct. Mount it where you want it, making sure to position where the gas lid door will open and the front holes are not over the bulkhead bonding area.- Top

Yes & No...
regarding whether or not there's a 'correct' mounting position. Center the rack around your gas filler door, sliding it back until the back of the rear bar is 4.25-inches from the most rearward portion of the rear deck's lip. Now, mark and drill your mounting holes for the attaching well nuts.
When these racks were off-the-shelf at the dealership, they originally came with a drill template. But, instructions above will get the job done without a hiccup.
A potential problem is installing on convertibles as the rear upright is bonded to the bottom of the rear deck just aft of the vent louvers. If you position the luggage rack too far forward, you wind up drilling into/through the rear upright support panel. Hey, that'll make your day for sure!!!
But, since the poster's car is a coupe, that's really not a problem as the rear upright panel isn't in the same position. Still, the dimension given will work, mon!- Top

Twice, I've used my 71's luggage rack...
on NCRS National Road Tour episodes to transport 'stuff'. The deduction for a dealer installed luggage rack is minimal, only a few points, IF it's the correct verison of the rack for that year car.
I guess my take is if a Top Flight car is so close to the 'edge' that a 6-point deduction pushes it into 2nd Flight, there's probably other, more important matters to attend to!
But, I wasn't advocating the poster go install a luggage rack, I was saying if you DO, then mounting geometry can be a factor and especially true if the car is a convertible...- Top
