1956 VIN info on frame

I've been told that 1956 VIN information can be found on the top left-hand frame rail (not the X member) near the driver's seat location. I checked this area using a flashlight and mirror while using a screwdriver to pry the body away from the frame a fraction of an inch. I was unable to find any stamping. Is there another place where the VIN information can be found (other than the VIN tag)?? BTW, the body is intact over the frame area (no holes), so I guess no one else has tried this on the car in the past.

On my 57 I used a wedge to make space between the floorboard and the frame. I used a Scotchbright pad to scrub the top of the frame, wiped it off and with a light and mirror found the VIN stamped near the front of the driver's seat.

Thanks, Verle. The frame is comprised of two 'C' channels welded together at intervals to form a box in cross-section. One of the channels is larger than the other and is the outside piece on the frame. Is your VIN located on the larger or the smaller channel?? I was told that it might be located on the larger of the two. However, I spent about 15 minutes looking on the top of both channels and didn't find anything even remotely like a stamped character. How well stamped were the characters of your VIN (lightly or deeply) into the frame?? Also, is the entire VIN on the frame, eg., E56S003456?? Did you have to unbolt the body from the frame to do what you did and roughly how much of a gap did you generate using your technique??

My VIN is stamped approximately parallel to the outside, about an inch or so from the outside. I did not unbolt the body altho that would certainly give more space.
The full VIN is stamped clearly. I have seen others that are very lightly stamped. Depends on how hard they used the hammer that time.

Thanks, Verle. Garry sent me some pictures of his VINs illustrating the locations on the frame which are exactly as you described. I didn't realize that there are two identical VIN stampings on the frmae in close proximity to one another - so much the better for me to make out and locate. Garry's VIN is stamped very lightly and that may be same in my case making the code more difficult to locate. However, I now have a very good idea where to look.
