    72 LT1 - Several Questions/How to's

I recently acquired a 72 Bryar Blue LT1 Coupe. It's in great shape (driver+) for the most part but does need a few things to make it right.

    1. There is an aftermarket stereo in the car. I am trying to find a correct stereo (AM/FM Stereo) for it. When I come across one, what's the best way to replace the existing? Pull the console then the cluster panel, or can I just pull the cluster panel?

    2. The tach has a constant clicking noise in it. I replaced the cable but it's definately coming from the tach itself. What's the best procedure to remove the dash panel and tach to get at it? Probably good to do at the same time as the radio. Clock not working and will also do that at the same time.

    3. There is a slight vibration in the engine above 5500rpm. It's not bad but I think it should be a little smoother. It does it both under load and when just reving in neutral. I'm thinking balancer but not sure. How best to diagnose or is some level of vibration inherent in these engines? It runs like a raped ape regardless and just keeps pulling hard amd strong.

    4. The clutch seems to be a little thin/warn. What's a good replacement clutch? Should I do the clutch disc, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing at the same time or being everything works fine, just do the disc.

    5. When cold the oil pressure is pretty much up at 70psi. When warm it's about 50-60 at various rpm. Oil is clean and it's not burning any. Seems a little high. Probably should hook up an external mechanical gauge to test the existing gauge right?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Joe..

Joe the console does not have to be removed to remove the factory radio and I would think the aftermarket stereo removal should be the same. If your 72 does not have factory air, and mostly configured like my 68, I don't think you will have to remove the guage panel to remove the radio. I has been a long time but I don't believe I did on my 68. The guage panel is easily broken at its weak points when removal is undertaken.

I just reinstalled my drivers side dash last night ... it is a job ... your going to have to remove the dash cap or drop the sterring column as there is VERY little room behind there to reattach all the lights and cables ... Just a suggestion, not sure if this would work ... you might be able to get by with removing the tach cable and spraying some lubricant in through the connector - what do you have to loose???

Joe - on the clutch, I would do all of the parts and get them professionally balanced. Even the original GM parts can't be trusted to be in balance, I went through this once and never again......too much work to take it out a 2nd time. I would suggest a LUK replacement disk and clutch, and have your flywheel balanced with the rest of the new parts.....Craig

Thanks for the info guys. I received my AIM today and ordered a FSM. In the meantime I'm driving and enjoying the car and will rip into it on a rainy weekend.

            Thanks again,

            Joe..
