    Muncie question

The muncie M20 I found in a 65 250hp had a non matching vin stamped on the main case started with a "P". The main case part number is 3885010 (1" counter gear pin) I understand this is for late 65 to 67. The vin for the 65 is "S106021" which was early in the production year and I suspect it should have a transmission with the 7/8 counter gear pin. Can anyone identify what kind of car this transmission came from?

    Thanks

    Bill

    Re: Muncie question

I just rebuilt the Muncie in my 66. The case number 3885010 was used 65-67. The number you found after the letter P is the date code. The VIN was stamped else where. If I recall along the housing where the imediate plate is bolted. Another indentifier is the number of ring grooves on the input shaft. If there are two rings then it is a 66 and above. If there are no rings at all it is a 65. Look at the web site www.5speeds.com, they have some good documentation on identifying Muncies.

Excuse my speling. imediate = intermediate plate or what is called the main bearing support.

        Re: Muncie question

The stamping that started with "P" had a series of numbers after it that looked like a VIN and was in the same location as the vin stamping on my 64 matching number transmission.

It's my understanding that in 1965 most of the transmission main cases were part number 3851325. (7/8" pin) and that the 1" pin case 3885010 went into production twards the end of production year. I suspect the 65's transmision was changed at sometime in the past.

        Thanks

          Need more numbers

Bill, I'm a little confused; are you saying that the CAR in which the "010" Muncie was installed has VIN ...S106021 ? Or, is this the VIN derivative you saw stamped on the trans ? The "010" maincase is '66 and '67, NOT 1965; and yes, it has the 1" countergear shaft. Need the complete "P" number (assembly month and day). Does it have the "584" tailcase, with the speedo cable on the passenger side ? Also, if the "6021" is not stamped on the trans, there should be another VIN derivative stamped on driver side rear maincase edge, or maybe on top forward or rear maincase edge. This should give assembly plant and VIN sequence, and, in combination with the "P" date, we can proceed from there. There's a slim chance this may have been a warranty or over-the-counter purchase trans, for which no VIN derivative will be found.
