I have been having a problem with the engine stalling on my 60. It will stall out at the most inopportune moments. Almost like someone killed the ignition switch. Then it is a real pain to get restarted. I have been blaming the rebuilt WCFB all along but I am wondering if I have misplaced the blame. Last night I had to change out a broker valve rocker. When I tried to start the engine to adjust the valve, I found that the car just wouldn't start. Plenty of fuel, though it was acting like it had no spark. So I removed the top iginition shield and install a tool between the dist cap and #1 plug wire that would let me see the spark inside this little glass tube with a light inside that would flash when the wire fired. I hit the key and the car started almost immediately. I have driven the car around and no more stalling. SOOO....has anyone else had this problem and how did you correct it. I have been thinking of using some kind of insulated covers for the coil wires or installing some kind of insulation on the underside and sides of the top cover. What do you think?
C1 Ignition shields shorting ignition?

I think your wires are bad...
I have a 55, which, like BB cars, had braided metal shields ON the wires. When the wires deteriorate, they short to the shields like you wouldn't believe. Then again, I guess you would. New wires puts a stop to the problem. At least you don't have to switch over the braid like I do (or shell out nearly $200 for new wires).- Top

Re: I think your wires are bad...
Everything is new. I even checked to see if when installing the shield I may have nicked one of the wires but they are all intact.. I suspect the wires that go to the posts on either side of the coil. purhaps one or the other are shorting out to the shield not the coil wire to the distributor.

The coil must be aligned to keep the ign and distributor wires away from the shield.Bill Clupper #618- Top

The coil must be rotated to keep the terminals away from the the top shield.
Many cars have burned up the entire harness, or worse, because the battery side of the coil shorted to the shield!

Re: I think your wires are bad...
Don,
are you using the repro Electric Limited wires? I am with my '65 and it also does not like to idle with the shields installed. I think these wires are to blame. I just run the car without the shields in place and the car runs fine. Good luck.
