    C2:67 Holley Throttle Plate Refinishing

Well I took apart an original 3810 throttle plate for refinishing today. I have no trouble with replating and coloring the steel parts but the aluminum throttle plate has got me stymied. How do you bring back that bright aluminum finish?

I tried dunking it in Jasco Metal Etch cut 2 to 1 (Phosphoric acid) and it turned gray black. Is there something else I should dunk it in or should I just use the old brillo pad.

Also in removing the throttle shafts, there was this plastic tape at each of the shaft bearings. Does anyone know where I can find replacement bearing tape for when I reassemble, or is there some other high tech substitute for the tape.

aluminum doesn't like acids. clean with brillo then take some Vista or Blue Coral auto wax along with elboe grease and it'll look way better than the black acid residue. mike

        Gerard,

Wow you moving right along with the carb rebuild process. Keep us posted with pictures if you can.

Try Eagle brand "etching formula" mag wheel cleaner on it. Dilute it with water first, and see if you like the results. I've used it on other aluminum parts with good results bringing back the original finish. It will also remove minor rust well.

            Kevin,

I'm moving along but I've got myself stuck on the main body coloring to match the fuel bowls (which came out great without replating). I've bead blasted and pickled it a couple of times, and it still won't take the yellow dichromate like the fuel bowls. How about asking your carburetor man, how he got yours to match up so nicely.

I have some aluminum cleaner used to clean aluminum tank trailers and heavy truck fuel tanks. It really brightens aluminum. If you know someone in the trucking industry, you might try them as a source. I purchased a gallon of it from a chemical supplier who bought it in barrels and repackaged it. If you wish, I will forward more details.
