If you're here with a Corvette...your probably hurting right now! T'storm is passing by with hail that has ranged up to and over 1 inch in diameter pummeling everything in sight. I'm watching it bounce off C5 and C6 convertible tops (among other exterior components) but have no clue what's its doing to those on the judjing field.

Re: Bowling Green Storm Report
I was on my way to BG for a NCM BOD meeting a few years ago in a company car, a ZR-1, and was caught in a violent hail storm with 1-2 inch hail and thought the car was going to be toast. To my surprise and delight there was not as much as a scratch on the car.

ME also
mrs clem and i have been caught in 2 different hail storms and 1 tornado down there in BG at the NCM. never hurt the corvettes but played hell with the tin cars. they looked like someone took a ball peen hammer to them. mrs clem and i were leaving the motel by the NCM after we had driven thru the hail storm and we heard a siren blowing and we soon found out driving down I-65 that was the tornado warning we heard.- Top

Re: Bowling Green Storm Report
I tried to get Tom to complete his report.... Well now you know the rest of the story.
Some Corvette damage. Minor (unless it was your car) fiberglass damage to a few cars, lots of metal trim dents, a rubber front bumper tear and a cracked removable glass hardtop. Trailers (aluminum doesn't like hail) and tin cars have dented hoods and roofs. Many of us will be in touch with out insurance companies on our return.Terry- Top

Re: The morning after...well maybe afternoon!
Thanks for the followup Terry...inherent to the forum discussion is that its open to all who witness such events to contribute as they wish as well as those curious to learn the outcomes of such unusual meterological events to emphasize as compelled. Don't feel you must wait for me I had two full days of judjing than had to get my go-cart lessons from our national judging chairman along with Paul Borowski. I've got pics but I doubt they'll do justice to the damage but can't post until I get back to base.
As the winds blew, the covers filled with air causing them to ballon up. So as the 1/2 inch to 1.25 inch hail stones pelleted the atmosphere, they tore through most covers. Fiberglass faired better than stainless steel trim and covers may have slowed the speed but inevitably size and speed caused the damage. 1961s as well as a 54 sustained similar damage on its stainless steel trim. I'm sure there were others as well. Also a report that as a car cover took flight...it got caught by the antenna which subsequently got bent.
A 1970 LT1 car sustained damage to the windshield wiper cover (metal) while a 1973 convertible with original rear window...well the hail punched holes through the brittle back window.
A low-mileage 1978 had its glass T-top cracked and the crack is growing as I had a chance to look at it today. An 1982 Collector Edition had its windshield cracked as well as a C4 Sportsman display.
Several cars had their fiberglass dinged or the headlamp cover (C3) dinged from the hail.
Also as early C3 owners have grown accustomed to as well as C2s and C1s,water damage was plentiful...cover or no cover! Car interiors were still drying out today. C5s and C6s sustained the storm well. Heard of no reports of damage either water or dings to C5s and because the event was held in conjunction with the ZR1/C4 gathering...they were all still racing around today and did not appear to have much damage (those I looked at). Don't know about C4 water damage.
Lots of metal cars now look like golf balls...Donnelly's caddie as one example! It's white. Trailers same thing.
So how did judging teams interpret the damage on the score sheets? The event went on as you would expect and the damage was documented as the typical deductions with notations made in the comment field that damage was most likely sustained by the hail storm. Deductions were made but if a car was close to its objective...than benefit of the doubt given to the car and therefore its owner. A one-time event interpretation.
PS...yes, the national judging chairman won the second annual 50 lap Bowling Green Southeast Regional NASCAR go-cart championship trophy.Tom Russo
