    '56-'57 hood release

Has anyone out there ever seen a hood release handle for '56-'57 corvettes that was made of bakelite? All I have ever seen or owned was chrome plated pot metal with HOOD RELEASE embossed on it. Thanks.

      Re: Nope

Jim, I haven't either. There is a guy on ebay that is selling what he says is an original hood latch cable off of a '57 corvette that the handle is made of bakelite. He says his research has uncovered that early '56 and late '57 corvettes had this handle instead of the chromed metal. I said no, but he insists. I suggested that maybe it was a service replacement or 'bubba" replacement. Just curious because in this hobby there are few absolutes and many mysteries to be solved. In my mind, this is one of the absolutes. Thanks.

Garry, IMHO, a case of a story goes along with the poduct (Generally the story makes the product more valuable to the seller). I.mot saying that a late '57 for instance didn't find a Baklite handle attached by some factory worker. BUT the seller had best provide good valid substantiation to back up his claim to the buyer. The Corvette owner will find an uphill battle with the NCRS judges on this one every time shown. Regards,

agree with jim. i'd guess the bakelite ebrake handle started life on a chevy pass car of the 55 to 57 era. mike

Thanks guys. Jim, I couldn't agree more. In fact I suggested this to him that it may have come from a passenger car, but definitely not a corvette. I even told him to look in reference books and parts suppliers, but, well you know the story.

BTW Mike, this was not an emergency brake handle, this was a hood latch handle that he is saying was early '56 and then late '57. In fact, he claims he as a couple more of them..........this is where you plug in the overused term "RARE" right? NOT!

I have a 57 built the last day of production with a Chrome handle.

Verle, thanks for your information. There was very little doubt in my mind that this guy is mistaken, but just when ya think you know, someone provides you with a little known trivia. Time to put this one to bed.
