Re: oil filter
Lyndon,
There seems to be varying opinions on this subject but I'll put my opinions out there. I believe the PF-25/embossed filter was used in 1969 and maybe early 1970 only. After that the smooth bottom white PF-25 was used. I have several embossed (none for sale) PF-25 filters and all have 1969 only dates on the boxes. The smooth bottom PF-25 boxes all start with 1970 and vary in the end dates depending on when they were made.
The 70/72 TIM & JG allows both types (embossed and smooth) but I have had judges look for the embossed filters on my 70 and 71 cars so now I use an embossed filter on the judging field just to eliminate the controversy even though I think the judges are wrong.
There was a great thread last year on the 1968 cars and the PF-29 predecessor to the PF-25. The PF-25 seemingly was introduced approximately with the 69 model year and the first version of the PF-25 was the embossed style.
I'm sure others will chime in on this one.- Top

Re: oil filter
Dave,
The NOS smooth filter I used on my 72 for judging at Hershey did not receive any deducts. At that meet, as I recall, the judges were not taking off points for either because, well, they had to listen to both of us.

Re: oil filter
As noted, no hit on the 72. I'm happy they judged yours first then.
Of course, the 71 got a Bowtie/Duntov at Hershey, so there really isn't an "ever after" for that car, is there?
If we're lucky, Dick Whittington changed the latest revision of the JG.

Re: dollars for points
You get a lot more bang speding $20 on a reproduction, and taking the white paint off the lip of the filter and sticking that filter on your car.
No way I'd pay $200 unless that ONE point kept me from a Duntov. And, I don't see that happening.

Re: dollars for points
other than the repo not having the embossed letters is there any ohter way to tell one from a real NOS filter. Now that AC has stoped production of the filter I would like to know what the repop makers will use for the new ones, a fram PH 13?- Top

They can't use a Fram. Fram filters don't have the flutes on the bottom (for an AC-style filter wrench). Some of the others like Purolator and Wix do have the flutes. However, the flutes are usually slightly different. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: dollars for points
Dick-----
I know where there's one. As I've mentioned before, I have a friend who has a 1970 Camaro Z-28 that he factory-ordered and purchased new. He drove it only the first day he took delivery of the car. That was May 19, 1970 and I couldn't be with him since my brother was getting married that day. I would rather have been with John when he picked up the Camaro since I had no real use for my brother's wife-to-be (my brother figured it out, too, but after it was too late). However, my mother insisted I go to the wedding----a big fancy, ostentatious affair at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in San Francisco (the bride's idea; it wasn't her or my brother's parish and, as a matter of fact, she wasn't even Catholic).
Anyway, John's car sat in the garage at his parents house for years. Finally, after John had been married for many years and went through several houses, they told him to get it out of their 2 car garage (he had a house with an 11 car garage by then). So, he trailered it out there and that's where it still sits. Just the way it was the day he took delivery. So, when I finally get out there I'm going to be able to tell, for sure, what air cleaner element and oil filter were being used in May, 1970. His car still has the originals. No doubt about it.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Ever discuss that with the team leader or the chief judge when you felt the Judges were incorrect?Bill Clupper #618- Top
