Re: I've used both and the winner is?????

    BOTH!

Both Kroyl and PB work extreemly and equally well.

Kroyl boasts that it can also be used to lube air tools as well.

The advantage of PB Blaster is that you can get your hands on it over the counter at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace etc.

With Kroyl on the other hand, you will have to order it unless you have a lubricant distributor near by who either has it or can get their hands on it.

I would wave a torch around the fitting warming it up but not to the point of either bluing the fitting or discoloring it. A couple of sequenses and it will probably pop free.

You can also use a penetrant along with this process, but not untill the torch is turned off and the fitting has cooled off to the point where it is barely hot to the touch.

A cheap bottle torch can easily handle this task. Just be exteemly mindfull where you wave the torch and take adequate precautions.

    Good luck Mike,

    Chuck

Re: Thanks Guys, Got Both Fittings Loose

For those in the know, "Kroil" stands for Kreeping Oil. When I was in the Quality Control Laboratory at Ford Motor Co. Rawsonville Plant near Ypsilanti, Michigan. The maintenance department used Kroil exclusively for "rusted/frozen" nuts, bolts, assemblies of all kinds and what ever else you could think about trying. Being the ever curious "Lab. person," I obtained a small sample bottle of said "stuff" and found it to be extremely reliable. FoMoCo bought it by the 5 gal buckets. I don't know where one could buy it outright but, as with most industrial grade materials there is probably a supplier out there somewhere with your name on a sample bottle of it just for the asking. Said sample will endear you to it for the rest of your life. Aaahhhhh the memories!!!!!!

Re: Thanks Guys, Got Both Fittings Loose

One of my least favorite and unrewarding things I did was attempt to replace the seals and rebuild a lower end on a small outboard boat motor (all aluminum). I thought, "No problem, I just take it apart and put it back together......" I even tried it twice because I could not believe the problems I ran into.

I developed a new respect for fittings that were screwed into aluminum and exposed to water, etc.

After I ruined the tail shaft housing, I experimented with getting other screws and bolts out of it. I found that what worked best for me was to use a little penitrating oil and then put the thing in front of a space heater and heat the whole thing up. I also used a hand held heat gun. That worked about the same. Much better results using heat.

I wasted a few bucks on those projects. I got even by selling some of the extra parts on ebay. One of the little engines I tossed under my porch. I was going to leave it there untill I could take it to the recycler. But, someone stole it from under my porch before I could take it there. Ha!

        Later, Terry
