    clutch noise/pilot bushing?

I am having a problem with my 62, 327, 4-spd. I get a rubbing noise coming from the front trany area when engaging the clutch. It happens when the pedal is just starting to engage the clutch and disappears when the pedal is fully released. I don't have any problems shifting in any gear. However, if I am moving along in gear and press the clutch in I occasionally get a rubbing noise that quickly comes and goes. If I sit still with the car in gear and clutch pedal pushed to the floor I sometimes feel like the clutch is not fully disengaging. I have put in a new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pilot bushing and throw-out bearing. I have adjusted the clutch and have the proper clearances between the disc and flywheel. The trany was rebuilt by a reputable shop and seems to work just fine. I am going to tear it apart again but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas that I could look for. I have been looking at the archives and found a guy that had the same problem with his 67 but I could not get through to him by e-mail. (It was way back in May of 2001) Thanks for any help, Ron.

It might be a transmission carrier bearing.....I had a similar experience with my '66.

      Ron,

It sounds like you problem may be a wore clutch fork at the point where it engages the throw out bearing. These sometimes wear and the surrounding area rubs the spinning throw out bearing. I don't think you can see this without going back in.

        Ron,

If the noise that you hear sounds something like a stiff brisle broom being pushed across a concrete floor and only occurs when the clutch is at the friction point, I would guess it's the disc and/or clutch plate and flywheel surfaces that are creating the noise. There are a few different things that can cause this. One is rust on either, or both, flywheel and pressure plate surfaces. Another common cause is a slightly rougher than normal machine surface on a new flywheel or pressure plate. Also, if the disk is damaged and some material/facing is missing, it will make this noise.

With the clutch pedal fully depressed or fully released, there is no sliding contact between it and the flywheel/pressure plate. As the pedal is released to the friction point, the noise will occur but then stop as soon as the pressure plate and the disk are rotating at the same speed.

If this problem seems to be getting slightly better with mileage, I would continue to drive the car for a few days and see what happens. If a rust or rough surface problem, it may go away completely. Hope so. Good luck.

          Ron,

I had the same problem as you described. Pilot bushing had been installed improperly, misaligned. Also new pilot bearing(offshore) looks like bronze material but is steel with coating, check with magnet. Replace with oil impregnated bronze type bushing. It worked for me.
