Kirk Kerkorian bids to buy GM Stock

DETROIT (Reuters) -- Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian's investment company on Wednesday offered to buy a large minority stake in General Motors at a premium to the struggling automaker's depressed stock price.
The announcement from Tracinda Corp. boosted GM stock nearly 10 percent and helped turn the broader market higher.
The $31-a-share offer price represents about a 13.4 percent premium over GM shares' closing price Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange of $27.77, Tracinda, which is owned by Kerkorian, said in a statement.
Tracinda already owns 22 million GM shares. The company said it will hold the common stock in GM, which last month reported its biggest quarterly loss in 13 years, for investment purposes.
Upon completion of the offer, Tracinda would own 50 million shares of the world's largest automaker, or about 8.8 percent of the outstanding shares.
GM shares rose 9.1 percent to $30.30 in premarket trading on Inet after Tracinda's statement.
Tracinda said it became aware of rumors over the weekend concerning its possible purchase of GM shares and it decided to go forward with the tender offer to remove any uncertainty in the marketplace.
Kerkorian, a Las Vegas casino mogul, was the largest investor in automaker Chrysler before it was acquired by Germany's Daimler-Benz in 1998. He is currently appealing a court ruling that dismissed his $1 billion lawsuit over the handling of the deal that created DaimlerChrysler, the world's fifth-largest automaker.

You can bet that his next move, after he gets the additional shares, will be to demand a seat on the BoD, and if he doesn't get it, he'll go after it in Federal court; that's his standard pattern. He's the poster boy for 87-year-old egomaniacs

Since you worked for Daimler Chrysler I wonder how you knew that? But then again the courts have not been too favorable to him.

That's because it's tough for a predatory hostile takeover mongrel who's worth umpteen billion dollars to come across in front of a judge as downtrodden, cheated, and penniless. He's teaching his daughters (Tracy + Cindy = Tracinda Corp.) to follow in his footsteps.

Maybe he, or his dauthers, will actually do something about GM's bloated cost structure and/or the mediocre designs.

All I know is he helped make me some money today. Or maybe I should say he helped regain some of my losses. Still have a ways to go.

For 1.5 billion dollars he deserves a board seat. *NM*

He was, probably still is , nationally ranked in the 85+ tennis circuit. I think took second place either last year or the year before. Once a competitor always a competitor!
