'67 Tung Sol Flasher....

The '67 judging manual states that the turn signal flasher attached to the left side of the radio is a Tung Sol yellow plastic flasher #323 and the hazard flasher is a Tung Sol metal, which attaches to the fuse block.

What I have here is a Tung Sol #323 yellow metal flasher, non DOT. So what do I have here, the hazard flasher, the JM doesn't say what color it should be. Thanks, PT

The turn signal flasher mounted on the radio side plate is the plastic #323 nonDOT.

The hazard flasher mounted in the fuse block is a #175 metal greenish rectangular cannister or one of a few others as listed in the JG manual

The difference betwen the flashers is the number of lights they must operate.

I don't believe a metal #123 is appropriate for either location.

These things still exist in the junkyards in many GM products not just Corvettes

That's a correct 'generic' part, Pat, but not what the judges are looking for on a '67 in the TS position. By that time, the case of the Tung Sol 323 had changed to yellow plastic (earlier built TS 323 flashers WERE packaged in a yellow painted metal case like what you show) and remained non-DOT.

Looks like a service replacement. Originals were plastic. In addition to the 175 hazard flasher, Tung-Sol 552 round silver metal were common in later production.

Actually the yellow metal flasher is correct for 63-65 without backup lights. The 64 dealer installed option backup lights and 65 w/factory installed backup lights used a blue metal 224 flasher. To support this the yellow metal flasher has 3 lamps indicated on the flasher, referencing the front signal lamp and the two rear signal lamps, thus 3 lamps. The blue 224 metal flasher has 2 lamps, thus one rear signal lamp and one front signal lamp.
Blue plastic 224, (non-DOT) is for 66. Yellow 323 (non-DOT) is for 67 and 68. 69 and I think to 73 is split nipple DOT and 74-77 and maybe 78 is non split nipple DOT

Patrick - The original '67 Corvette turn signal flasher was either a 323 Tung-Sol (TS) or 145 Signal-Stat (SS) and designed to operate 3- lamps. Typically if it's the TS, it's the yellow plastic cap version w/o DOT. That being said I've found that TS produced both the plastic and metal covered 323 flasher from '65 thru sometime in the late '60s to early '70s. The same is true for the TS 224 flashers, 2-lamp flashers. It's just that the '67 Corvette generally had the 323 w/ the plastic cover.

The TS hazard flasher used for the '67 production was the 552. Early cars has a 552 w/ silk screened info around the cap and mid and late cars would have had an embossed top of the cap. Both TS flashers were a natural metal (silver) finish.

The other hazard flasher was the SS 175 which has a green anodised metal cover and SIGNAL-STAT and 175 embossed on the top of the cap.

The metal 323 has been found on '65 Corvettes w/o BU lamps.

Prior to 1965 different flashers were used because the cars used different bulbs for the tail light, stop-directional signal, i.e the #1034 bulb, so there was a change in flashers 1965 when they went to the "new" tail light, stop-directional signal bulbs, i.e. the #1157 bulb.

Gene - Good discussion but a couple of comments. I think you will find that the Tung-Sol 323 yellow flasher did not come into the system until 1965 when the light bulbs changed to 1157 from the 1034 bulb for pre-1965 cars.

FYI, the 1966 TIM&JG calls for the blue metal 224 (early) and the blue plastic 224 (late).
