Has anyone out there had experience rebuilding early 63/64 Posi units? I have dissassembled mine--now I find I need the J-21175-4 spring compressor as shown in the 63 shop manual to compress & re-install the 4 clutch pac springs. I have tried various methods of compressing springs--no sucess--Any suggestions --where can the proper spring compressor be purchased-- Thanks for any help.

Re: Early 64 Posi Rebuild
If the clutches are worn you're probably better off getting a complete new posi case. When I took mine apart and had the case magnafluxed, it was cracked around the "window", and this is a common problem. It's been so long I can't remember how I disassembled it. Don't know if GM still offers the complete case, but aftermarket units such as Auburn are worth checking out as they are likely both cheaper and better, and you won't lose any points.

Leroy-----
The 1963 and early 1964 positraction carrier units were manufactured by Borg Warner or Dana(I've forgoten which). As far as I know, service parts are not available for these units. In any event, they are not now available from GM. GM recommended that these units be replaced with the later Eaton-manufactured carrier, which is serviceable. The Eaton unit is GM #3997925, but I am not certain that it is still available. It was the last time I checked, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

When I rebuilt my 64 posi unit I updated it to the eaton unit, the dana units have not been servicable for many years. They make a good doorstop.I purchased A rebuilt posi unit from West Coast Differentials in Rancho Cordova CA. 916 635-0950 FAX 635-1105 mine is a 411 ratio I believe the lower ratios are a different posi unit.
