I purchased a Corvette Central gas tank kit for my 57 and I am having a problem with the installation. After struggling for half a day to get the new straps attached, I decided to due some measuring between the old and new tanks. The new tank is 3/4" larger in circumfrence (I wrapped a tape measure around it) and it sits 1/4 higher in the car. The strap lengths are the same as the old ones. I cannot get the strap bolts started unless I remove the lock washer and spacer. The clearance between the strap and the body is so tight that I have to use a hammer to get the socket on the bolt. When I finally tightened the straps, the bolts stripped out. The bottom and bolt side of the tank had dents in it from being pushed down by the straps. The bottom of the new tank looks slightly different than the old one (and dented now also). The tank says 'Made in Canada' on it. Has anyone run into this problem before?

Re: C1 Fuel Tank
Hi Mike
I just purchased a tank from Quanta.. It had the proper OAL logo. Corvette Central does not have it.. The tanks were made in Canada according to what I read.I had a little trouble getting mine in my 62 vette also.. I only needed to use longer bolts to get the straps tight. The tank is in and all set..I also read that Quanta was the only company licensed by G.M. to reproduce the tank to their specs..All you can do is try longer bolts.
Good luck..............John- Top

Re: C1 Fuel Tank
After reviewing past archives, it is obvious to me that the repo tanks are larger. The Canadian made tanks are used by Corvette Central and Quanta. I appreciate all the info and I'll have to do what it take to get the tank to fit properly.- Top

Re: C1 Fuel Tank
As per our last set of discussions on this--bending down the rear corners and "massaging" the seam in front where the straps contact the tank enabled me to get my previously "too big" tank to fit perfectly with the right length bolts. You have to beat on the seam on the front--compare it with your original.
Generally, if you have to use the "too long" bolts to get the tank to fit, the fiberglass cover will not go all the way down all the way around.
Good luick!
