    C2 Transmission Restamp

I know restamping is a controversial topic, but here goes. My otherwise numbers matching 65 had a tranny transplant at some point in its history. I realize that the tranny isn't even judged, and no one will see it but me. However, I have located a correct date coded tranny with no VIN. Any recommendations on who can restamp? Are stamping kits available for the tranny?

    Thanks!

don't try stamping the case without the tailstock and intermediate plate installed( may fracture the main case). pat boyd rents the stamps. mike

Beware the later "Service" 323 case configuration

... unless you have an extremely rare dated 3851325 transmission (over-the-counter), without VIN or warranty stampings, purchased before the initial stock of 7/8" countershaft pin trannys was exhausted, at which time Muncie used the 660 / 661 1-inch case casting, identified by the wide VIN / Assy date stamp pad on the passenger side, but cast for the smaller pin. They gave them the "325" casting #, for service identification, but the font of the numbers is very thin. However, I would expect that the "P" date of one of these would use the latter format (ie. P7H23). And make sure the "P" date is not stamped on the lower-right ear of the side cover; that's another sign of a '64.

Another point for 1965 transmissions: make sure the shape of the top-rear bolt boss corresponds (at least) to the lag between the "P" date and your car's VIN. Sometime between 25th Nov 1964 and 12th December, the switch was made from the round boss (forward end) to the larger square boss. So if you see (example) a P0215 date on a round boss, it's a Feb 15th 1964 assy, not 1965.

Re: Beware the later "Service" 323 case configurat

Thanks Wayne, but you're way beyond my level of expertise. I thought all 325 cases were created equal, and the assy date stamp on the passenger side vertical flange identified it as a 65 vs. the date code located by the side cover for a 64. I didn't think there was any more to it than that. The unit I'm looking at is on Ebay auction number 4546293841. My VIN corresponds with an approximate build date of 5/13/65, so an assy date of 4/29/65 would be just about perfect.

Any thoughts on if this would be correct for my application?

              Looks good, but ....

... the pic of the internals shows the input/clutch gear has every second synchro tooth ground off (dragsters call this a "crash box, I believe). It has the square top case boss, so it really is April 1965 original assy. And it is an M21, not an M20. Looks like someone has removed the speedo gear fitting and sender gear (makes me wonder if the speedo drive gear is still in there).

You may want to persist in asking if there's a VIN stamping at specific locations; namely the regular St.Louis location of driver side (opposite the "P" assy. date), but also possibly on top of the main case, at the front, or at the back (by the square boss) and to the right or left.
