One option in Hana is to rent a ranch house. I am told it is really great and no more expensive than a typical hotel room and less expensive if done for a few days or a week.. Then take horse back rides on the beach!

We stopped in a little town (I'll have to ask the wife the name of it). Found a great coffee shop full of real local surfer dudes and dudettes. I had flashbacks to the '60s. Great eggs benedict. We rented a cooler from a bodaga across the street and got some sandwiches from them too. Picnicked at the seven pools park. They were having a dry spell, so there were only 5.6 pools. The park ranger carded me before he would sell me the Golden Ager Pass LOL!
Take your time going, you can do the run for time on the way back. You will have to leave early in the morning to keep from driving back at night. There is too much scenery to do it in the dark.

My wife and I got in our rented Chrysler Sebring convert, drove the road to Hana, parked the car and walked 2 miles into the rain forest to see a HUGE waterfall. I forget how high it was, maybe 700'. We walked through a bamboo forest on the way, and crossed a few dry riverbeds too. Anyway, we walked back out, got a bite to eat and drove back to our hotel. That trip took 10 hours! The road to Hana is awesome. Look for banana trees along the road too.
No place in the world better than Hawaii in my opinion, and best of all....NO INSECTS! That was 1996.
