If I understand correctly, the numbers on a wiring diagram show the gauge of the wire (so 20 B would be 20 gauge black wire). I am trying to fix some dash wiring that bubba got into, and purchased some 20 gauge wire for my splices. But, the 20 gauge I purcahsed appears smaller than what is in the car. Have the sizes of wire chaged in the past 40 years? Is 18 or 16 gauge now what use to be 20 gauge? The wires I'm splicing are in the steering column and the tan wire to the parking break switch. Thanks!

Re: wire/wiring diagrams
AMG hasn't changed to my knowlege but I know some fastenrs as well as wiring from China and other places will not be the same size as stated. Check that your wire is American Wire Gauge size and made in USA. Compare to other wires in the circuit your working on. Check other circuits to see if they are correct.
Plus remember these are old cars. Like most of us have lerned their have been many hands in,on and under these cars. Good luck.- Top

Re: wire/wiring diagrams
Wiring gauge (thickness of the actual copper) hasn't changed and is a defined entity. What HAS changed is the insulation. Factory original wiring from the era was a form of PVC with a given temperature/flamability rating that has long been discontinued based on environmental concerns (PVC = a known carcinogen).- Top
