C2 what is correct dash/console paint?

I want to freshen up the dash, console & glove box (black interior). Is it satin, flat or semi gloss? Any particular brand anyone can recommend?

    Thanks!

I used Krylon semi flat black. The archives also makes reference to the same paint.

Brian: I have used Krylon 1613 semi-flat for many years, but have now switched to "trim paint" by either Duplicolor or SEM. It's a much nicer semi-gloss.

Krylon changed its packaging about a year ago, and I swear the paint got significantly flatter about that time.

Try the Trim Paint -- you'll like it. It's good for the steering column & hub as well.

what is the product number for Duplicolor or SEM?
Also, how did you prep the console to prevent fisheyes?

Ralph: the products I mentioned are both Black, but if your console is other than black, I'd use SEM self-etching primer first. For prep, I've never had to do more than make sure it's clean. No need to scotch-brite, bead blast or anything else. The self-etching primer has a mild acid content which gives it a good bite on the chrome.

All this stuff is readily available at your local auto paint store. Heck, they even have it here in Tucson!

            Thanks Mike.

I was under the impression that the correct gloss was really someting a little more than flat. Semi flat seems to fit that description. The trim pain if I understand it is for exterior black trim whick is semi flat. Since you mentioned semi gloss, I just wanted to be sure to use the right thing.

I was not going to prime the console or dash anyway but glad to hear that's correct.

            I love this board!!

            Best regards,

            Brian

              Brian:

Another thing I'll mention: You can control the amount of flatness/low gloss by how heavy a coat you apply. The heavier you go, the more reflectance you'll get.

Also, I forget to mention that the SEM self-etch primer is also available in grey. If you're topcoat color is not dark, you should use the grey primer on your console. Keep the primer coat fairly thin so you don't fill up the "grain" pattern embossed into the metal.

I used the Krylon 1613 on my dash gauge cluster and also the center console. Finish was nice and looks great, but the paint is not as durable as the original paint. You have to be very careful with it not to scratch or nick the paint. I just noticed that my key chain had already started nicking the paint on the gauge cluster after only a few drives. Someone needs to identify a paint that has the right sheen that is nice and durable....

                  Brian,

-------Primer was not used on the cosole or dash. The self-etching primer is not correct, but does help with the adhesion to those pieces. Hope this helps.........Bill S
