    Acceptable/durable interior dye ?

    Was wondering if there is an acceptable and durable interior vinyl dye system that is NCRS acceptable and close to factory correct ? Thank you;

    Re: Acceptable/durable interior dye ?

    Two issues here: (1) NCRS 'acceptable' vinyl dye, and (2) durable dye system.

    On the first issue, that's a red herring. Interior vinyl wasn't colored via externally applied dyes. The color was molded into the vinyl. Since NCRS objectives are to appear as factory original, there's a logical disconnect here... BUT, to the extent you can apply dye to vinyl and make it APPEAR as the factory original fabric dictates your probability for sucess.

    On the second issue, dying vinyl is a tricky proposition. MUCH depends on how well you prepare the vinyl to accept an external dye and where/how the target fabric is used. Items like dash components pretty rarely see human body contact vs. seats and door panel fabric that gets HEAVY stress from human touch. The odds you can pull off an acceptable dye job go up as the fabric's exposure to human touch, rubbing, and abrasion stress go down.

    Some paint manufacturers, like SEM, offer a complete system for vinyl coloring and that's your best 'shot' at getting a decent job. Look for a two-step system from the same manufacturer with the first step being a fabric clean/prep stage. Getting as much embedded dirt and oil out of the top layers of the fabric as is possible is VITAL to the sucess of the second stage color application. You want the color to penetrate the vinyl surface as uniformly and deeply as possible.

    Bottom line, sometimes you can get good results, other times you can expect the freshly applied dye to 'flake' off when stressed and you might wind up with non-uniform coloration due to contaminants thwarting the penetration of your new color....

        I "dyed" my red sunshades about 15 years ago. The car has seen some sun while it sat in the front of a coney island surrounded on three sides with glass. They faded quite a bit but did not peel. I plan on respraying again. The dye at that time did not have enough UV protection.
