    Fiberglass Delamination

The fiberglass on the hood of my 1956 is beginning to delaminate latterally at the two lead edge corners. The hood is NOT coming loose from the circumferential support structure on the underside, rather the lass on the hood itself is coming apart.

One suggestion I've been given is to shoot Gorilla Glue up into the delamination, place a sheet of balsa wood on the top and bottom surfaces of the hood, and clamp it down so that the delminating surfaces are pressed together while the glue sets up.

Anyone faced this problem and successfully addressed it? Photos of the problem are available.

    Re: Fiberglass Delamination

I wouldn't use Gorilla Glue...if this process continues, and additional remedy has to be taken, I wouldn't won't to be dealing with a foreign material. I would use polyester resin for any repairs...that is what was used originally. I not so sure that squirting in some resin and clamping it will give you anything but a temporary fix. I'm thinking a permanent solution will mean grinding off all the loose material, and laminating new resin and mat to replace, but I have obsessive-compulsive tendencies to the point of being masochistic.

If you can post pictures, that would be interesting. I have not heard of "delamination" within a panel before...is this C1 phenomenon? Are C1 panels hand-laid; i.e. do they have "layers" within the panel thickness?
