Okay, I know that the TIM&JG states that they should be un-polished zinc. However I seem to remember a post some time ago stating that cad was more correct...and also that cad and zinc are hard to tell apart. The latest post I remember says that they were galvanized. They are the original backing plates with some pitting so I was thinking that silver cad would be the way to go seeing as the clear zinc would more easily show the pits. What are your thoughts on this?
69 backing plates zinc or cad?

Sir:
I cannot tell you Zinc or Cadmium. Galvinizing is a hot dip in another metal for coating which produces the crystalline surface appearance. Plating is an electrical deposition of one molecule at a time.
I have only examined a very few GM Corvette blueprints, much less than 1,000. Based upon this limited view, I noticed that many metal parts had a plating spec that said "Cadmium or Zinc". Apparently it was up to the manufacturer to decide.
I have bad news for you, neither Zinc or Cadmium will hide pits.
