i'm having a rear differential rebuilt, it will be sand blasted then rebuilt, the rebuilder asked me if i wanted it painted, what is the corect finish on the rear end case and will it rust if not painted, thank you

The correct finish is NATURAL cast iron. If you leave it natural cast iron, especially after a bead blast surface treatment, you will have natural RUST in short order. So, you have several choices, all of which will likely cost you some judging points as they will be discernable:
1) Paint it using "cast blast" (I find VHT Hi-Temp cast blast to be the most "original" looking);
2) Apply a very thin coating of satin-finish urethane. Done right, you might even get away with this without deductions;
3) Apply a coating like Pre-Lube 6. This will give a natural finish that will stay rust-free and will probably receive no points deduction. However, you'll need to re-apply the coating on a regular basis (like, every 4-6 months, or so).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
