    Midyear coupe window instalation help

Has anyone come up with a way to install the side window glass and the channel liners? Installing the rear and upper channel liner bubble clips is beyond hard. I have tried installing the glass first, then I cant get the bubble clips, and I have tried installing the channel liners first, then I cant get the glass in the chanels.

I would be greatful for advice. The article in the recent restorer did not detail this area well.

    Thank you
    Jon

Re: Midyear coupe window instalation help

I am also in the process of doing this on my coupe. I read the service manual many times over and I believe this is the order of assy:
      1. Cut the new channel liner at the Top of the lower rear channel holder to make 2 pieces. This is just above the clip that holds the liner in the channel. This isn't stated anywhere in the directions BUT it was 2 pieces when removed from the door. If you read between the lines in the service manual I believe the channel must be 2 pieces.
      2. Install the channel liner in the door holes on the top and rear of the window. I had a lot of trouble with those darn little clips as they appear to be "flat" on top and my old ones were more spherical. I destroyed one side channel liner before I ground off the clips to be more spherical. This allowed me to get the liner installed using a 1/4" piece of wood to push the clips into the door. Place the lower channel into the door an out of the way for future use.
      3. Install the side window regulator in the door.
      4. Install the side glass in the door, placing it as far back and to the bottom of the door as possible. I placed a long double strip of duct tape on the glass as a handle for later use.
      5. Install the vent window assy in the door and screw it in place. As you install it you need to pass it over the glass edgeand get the channel started.
      6. Once the vent assy is in, pull the side window up into the vent track channel and the upper channel liners. Connect the bottom of the window to the regulator with the attaching bolts/nuts.
You should now have a window secure in the up position.
      7. NOW install the lower rear track in the door with the screws thru the rear of the door.
      8. Check track alignment of the forward and rear tracks as you roll the window up/down and adjust accordingly.

I must qualify this procedure as I've not gotten to step 5 yet..... I may do it later tonight.

Thank you Steve. My old channels also came out in two pieces, but I just thought that it was because they were worn out. Your instructions are the third different way I have read and they make sence. However, I think if you put the vent window in after to upper channel, you may have trouble getting the top of the vent window past the channel. I was able to install the channels and the glass by sliding the rear channel in after the vent and the side windows were installed, but could not get to the clips. Those @#@#@ clips are mean. However, I could see that the upper half of the rear channel was accessable after installing and lowering the glass into the regulator assembly. So I would try to put the upper rear half of the channel in last.

Good luck and again, thank you for your help. You have given me a couple of good ideas.

P.S. I replaced my door handle buttons with new ones from Long Island Corvettes and had to grind off about 5/8" of the rods. So check yours if you replaced them.

Re: Midyear coupe window instalation help

          Jon,

I finished up my door last evening. It went together without a problem. By putting in the upper fuzzies first you get a nice fit at the vent. When you install the vent it slips right by the fuzzies.
Again the clips are not like my originals and I needed to grind them off some to allow them to start into the holes.
I did forget to install the outer window wipe on the outer window sill so I had to disconnect the window to get it low enough to install the screws.
That item should follow in sequence after the vent assy is installed.
At that point the window is still low in the door.
I purchased some repo door handles. They were absolute JUNK!!!. They looked nice but..... They had a different contour than the originals resulting in a gap between the door and the handle. That was a big waste of money. I couldn't use them.

Thank you again for your help. I was able to figure out how to reinstall the glass without cutting the rear channels in two. It was a bear to figure out, but was ok on the second. My door handles are Genuine GM and are the same contures as the original and fit the doors exactly. The new buttons were repo and as I said, I had to grind down the rods. I have the GM handle numbers if you want to buy new GM handles.

Where did you purchase the new door handles from....? Are they GM RESTORATION?

                Re: Midyear coupe door handles

I bought the door handles on ebay. I had not found handles at all, and then, all of a sudden they were everywhere. The prices dropped from $30.00 each to $30.00 a set when I bought mine. This was probably 9 months ago. I have not been watching ebay for months so I do not know if they are still out there. My handles came in two different GM boxes. One box is marked "Genuine General Motors Parts" and is an older blue and white. The other is the newer blue and white box that says "Genuine GM" and has a GM routing yellow tag and sku label. The first box has group #10.527 and part number #5719143 and LH for left hand. The other has the same group number with the part number #5719142 and an RH for right hand. You might try running these numbers through a gm dealer. Neigher box is labeled GM Restoratoin parts.

I could only find a very slight difference between the new and original handles. The new ones have a slight edge on the outter curve.

Good luck and thank you for your help
