Re: master brake and date code?

The dating aspect of MC castings changed from year to year throughout the Shark era, so it's not all that easy to answer your question... But, here's the big picture.

On those MC's that were date coded by the factory (not all were), you look at the machined 'pad' area on the front side where the brake lines attach and visually inspect for a pretty TINY sequence of stamped numbers. The particular Judging Guide for the various Shark cars tells you how to decode this sequence (if memory serves, XXXY, a Julian form of dating where XXX=day of year, and Y=year).

In later Shark JG books (e.g. 73-74), it's taught the MC's raw casting was dated coded with an embossed sequence of the form AAXYYY where AA= an alpha + numeric code indicating the source mold, X= the year, and YYY= the Julian date of the year. Other Shark era JG books (especially early) don't address this issue as it's not believed that these casting characters are anything more than a source traceablity sequence.

So, when you put the two pieces of your question together (how to read the date code on a MC in general + then say you're looking for one for your '68), the answer becomes complicated! What's believed to be correct/true for '68 is one thing and what's true in general for all equivalent versions of the same MC casting is another thing.

Jack thanks, I have two Masters #5460346 for my 68 Vette and one is orginal The 4 small numbers by line out is as you said, XXXY with Y being the year! I was needing verification. Someone was trying to say that the first number was the year?
thank you again for your time and responce

Ps I am guessing that the first three numbers are calender days? (example 1328) would be the 132nd day of the year 1968?
