C2 Underbody Seat Belt Cables

The three underbody cables on my 66 are missing the plastic tubing that is wrapped around them. Does anyone know of a way to replcce the tubing without removing one of the balls from the cable? If I slit heat shrink tubing I don't believe that it will form properly. I think that there was a thread sometime back discussing this subject.

I used heat shrink tubing. I found the smallest that would fit over the ball on the end, slipped it over and used a heat gun to shrink it. It was difficult to slip over the ball and through the hole in the bracket. I ruined a few pieces in the process.

A friend suggested a vinyl dip coating that can be purchased at hardware stores. This is the same material that coats tool handles, etc. Anybody have any experience with this stuff?

Dave: I used 3M shrink sleeving and it turned out great. You could use the Plasti-Dip in spray form, but you'd need about 10 applications to build up the needed thickness. In other words, a real PITA that doesn't even give a better result.

What size shrink tubing did you use? Was it the 1/2 in size as Randy used? I assume that you also pulled it over one of the ball ends?

Dave: yes, I think it was 1/2 inch. I took my cable down the electronics supply house and bought the smallest size that would go over the ball.
Again, it was the real 3M material, and I was pleasantly surprised at how it shrunk down and how thick it was. Mike
