    Carrol Shelby Cumberland, Md. 1957

I thought everyone would enjoy seeing the attached picture of Carrol Shelby at the 1957 SCCA Cumberland,Md. event.

Carrol was the lead driver for Team Maserati..but he also drove the Corvette on this occasion per request of Ed Cole and Eb Rose.

Eb brought the Bill Mitchell SR and the 2 Sebring cars now painted Black/Pink to the event.

Eb drove #65 and the Bill Mitchell SR2 that he now owned and Carrol drove the #64 car.

You will notice the Bill Mitchell SR2 and the other Black/Pink car in the background.

    More later...Joe

    Re: very cool photos!

Carrol came to Chevrolet first, but you guys turned him away! Just think, the Cobra could've had a Chevrolet powerplant! If it weren't for Lee Iacocca, Carrol Shelby, and Larry Shinoda, the Mustang would be just another non-discript/Taurus/sedan. I think Peter Brock had something to do with the 58 or 59 Corvette, didn't he? I know he was instrumental with the 64 Daytona Coupes and was solely responsible for the tail he 'pop-riveted' on made of aluminum.

      additional cumberland vintage photos

joe: go to www.nationalroadrally.com and click on the photos at the botton of the page. a dozen of us cumberlanders re-started motorsports activities at the old cumberland airport about 3 years ago. we're running autox 6 weekends this year. hope to have side/by/side races in the near future. i wonder if the black/pink 57's color scheme was inspired by the Donna mae Mims, the pink lady who worked and drove for don yenko of cannosburg, pa. donna still comes to our autox events, still wears pink tights and drives a pink c-3. hollar if i can help with any cumberland scca history as i've got a bunch of literature on the subject. mike

        Mike

I think Eb Rose told me that the Black/Pink was inspired from one of his friends ( Ed Zinc?)that ran at Indy. Eb later ran at Indy in an Foyt special and a Sheraton/Thompson special during the years of 61,62,63

I checked out your site..it is fantastic!

Actually Peter designed the Stingray coupe..

..back in 1960 where they called it the XP-96. Mitchell dropped the idea and stuck with roadster to save money. Later, Mitchell added the split window to the coupe because of his love for the Bugatti 57SC Atlantique. Shinoda and Chuck worked on the roadster while Brock stayed with his coupe. Here's a shot of a repro 1964 Daytona coupe that Brock was so involved with its concept.
