I have the unrestored original 1957 Nassau/Daytona/Sebring Corvette..one of two built in November 1956 as mentioned on page 61 of the Karl Ludvigsen book Corvette America's Star Spangled Sports Car.
Many long time NCRS members and other Car enthusiasts have been very kind in sharing pictures of this car during its racing days..and I wanted to thank them on this board.
I continue to search for more information that will help complete the file on this very special piece of Corvette history.
#775 built in November 1956 was fitted with the following special equipment.
* Hardtop Only
* Radio/Heater Delete
* Big Brakes/Big Brake inner fenders
* Big Tank
* RPO 581 Traction Bar rear suspension
* Fast steering adapter
* Factory Roll Bar
* Modified original drivers seat
* Engineering Workorder engine
* Special Lab assembled pre-production Fuel Injection #132
* Special Fuel Line
* Shortened Steering Column
* prototype air box
* etc..
The car was shipped to Sebring to be course tested by Dick Thompson prior to being shipped to Nassau for the Governors Trophy Race the first week of Dec.1956. This was the debut of Fuel Injection. The car and the event is chronicled in Corvette News Vol.1 #1.
Following Nassau it was returned to Florida where it was driven at the Daytona Speedweeks by Paul Goldsmith setting the standing and flying mile speed records.
After the Daytona Speedweek event ended ..Ed Cole instructed the car be sent to the New Smyrna Airport to be driven by Paul Goldsmith to shore up competition against the Ford backed Thunderbirds.
It then was sent to SEDCO for additional preparation and sent to Sebring as a practice car...prior to the arrival of the newer #3 and #4 cars that were in the race.
Anyone wishing to contribute any history on this special car is certainly welcome as it gets prepared for the 50th Anniversary of Fuel Injection and other special events. We plan to debut the car at the 2007 Daytona 500 for the 50th Anniversary of its running at the 1957 Daytona Speedweeks...and may also bring the car to this years NCRS National Convention to show it prior to restoration.
Prior to my purchase the Nassau/Daytona/Sebring car was owned buy one man for 47 years..who purchased it in May 1958 after it was retired from racing. It remains on the original title.
Kindest Regards...Joe Trybulec
