62 front license backing plate problem

I bought a new license backing plate, as the original is rather bent and rusty. I also got an NOS lower bar, and a set of repro bumperettes (said to be NOS, but they're repros. Ebay caveat emptor....). My problem is that the L-brackets on the plate sit about 1/4 inch from the edge of the plate, as opposed to the original, where they are flush (And bent, looks like someone played low speed bumpercars at some point). So of course, when I try to assemble the plate to the bumperettes, I can barely get the nut on the bolt, and the bumperettes don't fit flush against the edge of the plate. A stack of washers in the gap between the L-bracket and the bumperette seems a bit Bubba, no? Has anyone tackled this one before?

And the curvature of the repro backing plate doesn't match the curvature of the repro bumperette where they meet. I was fooling with this today on my car.

I'm just going to snug the nuts on these 4 bolts. Deform the bracket a little to get a tight fit. No washers.

Re: Another shot of the gap:

Rob, I have two front bumperette assys (one from my '58 and one from a '60) and a "NOS" back plate ("NOS" probably purchased in the early to mid '80s from GM). I looked at the NOS plate and the brackets are set in like the repro shows. On the two assys neither of them has a good mate between the plate and the bumperettes. One of them has had the brackets on the license backing plate replaced (I assume the spot welds let go) and the other one has the brackets deformed to meet the bumperettes. I'll bet if you look at the brackets on your old one they are deformed from the crisp 90* bend they had new. Hope this helps.
