I am looking for any information on what product(s) I can use besides soap and water to clean my engine block. (nothing harsh) I just want to remove oily dirt. I am not looking for any product(s) that will enhance or restore, just clean.

Re: engine cleaning
Wait for a nice warm day. Gather all your cleaning goodies, a good jack, and maybe a couple of cans of foam de-greaser. Drive over to your favorite $1 car wash and have at it. I suspect you're car is really dirty (underbody). This will get all the major grease and grime off. After this is done you should be able to easily keep it clean from then on with just short periodic hand cleaning. Bob- Top

Re: engine cleaning
This method is great for major clean up although you have a lot of water to contend with on things that should not have water on them, also be VERY careful of any water on hot exhaust manifolds, they can crack very easily when cooled with even the hottest water.

Re: engine cleaning
Gary, I have great success using cream hand cleaner, the kind that comes in a tub. Put it on with a medium sized paint brush, working it in to all crevices and nooks and crannies. Let it sit over night then wipe off with rags or those heavy duty paper shop towels. Go back over cleaned area with a clean dry cloth. It will look great and you won't have used water, breathed toxic fumes or handled harsh chemicals (your hands will look great, too). By the way, I have used this method to clean the ENTIRE engine compartment, including firewall, inner fenders, wiring, frame, fuel lines, brake lines, etc. Do the whole compartement in one operation.
I used this method on a 67 unrestored survivor coupe and it took an NCRS top flight award. Got rave reviews for orginal but clean engine compartment. One caveat, don't use hand cleaner on PAPER labels.
Try it, you'll like it.- Top
