    '62 C1 327/340 Fuel pump resto/rebuild

I'm looking for some tips or direction on rebuilding my fuel pump, which by the way was working flawlessly before being removed for the engine rebuild.

From an appearance standpoint it looks in very good condition for a 40 yr old part. However it appears to have been worked on before, judging by the screws, a couple of which have nicked or distorted heads. The plating is mostly faded as would be expected.

I have looked at the rebuild kits and they seem fairly simple. But I have never had one of these apart. What I'd like to know is how difficult or simple the reubuilding process is and what should I do about replating? I think it's gold dichromate. Does anyone provide a reputable rebuild/resto service at a reasonable price? I am always reluctant to ship parts out but have had good luck when you know the right person & place to go. Thanks.

you need a 4656 pump which had no plating involved. its a 3 piece pump, all die-cast. the rebuild kits are readily available. the only hassle is attaching the metal end of the diaphram to the pivot arm . it may take you 10 or 15 minutes to get the diaphram to the pivot. rest is straight foreward. get er done. regards, mike

Clare, rebuilding the pump is fairly straightforward and relatively easy. There are few moving parts and the hardest part is getting the diaphragm hooked back on the lever. Once you have it apart, you'll understand. I purchased my rebuild kits from Zip, I believe, and they came with everything necessary to put it back to new condition. Use a socket head to install the one-way valves once the old ones are removed. Good luck.

        CLare,

You stated that the pump worked before the engine rebuild. When the engine was re-assembled, are you sure that the fuel pump pushrod was in the fully retracted (inwardmost) position. If it was not, then someone may have inadvertantly installed the fuel pump on top of the pushrod.

You can check this even with the engine in the car. Remove the fuel pump and manually rotate the engine until the pushrod is as far up in the block as it will go. Then, remove the short 3/8" (9/16" head)bolt from the right-front of the block. With the pushrod all the way in, install a longer 3/8" bolt as a temporary pushrod retainer in the hole you removed the bolt from. Install this bolt carefully, so as to not nick or score the pushrod.

Re-install the fuel pump, remove the pushrod retaining bolt and re-install the short 3/8" bolt, reconnect the fuel lines ant see if the pump works.

        Regards,
        Jim

          Wrong pump/service replacement-Need 4656

Mike is right, I need the 4656 fuel pump. I have a service replacement without the AC casting or the part number on the mounting flange. Otherwise it looks the same, except that I think it was gold dichromate plated, mostly faded now. I hadn't checked it closely against the judging manual until I read his answer to my rebuild question.

Apparently these pumps are relatively easy to come so it's an easy fix worth about 10pts on the judging field. However, there is quite a bit of difference in the price between vendors.

During my resoration project I've discovered other service items which were replaced somewhere over the years, (voltage reg, starter, generator, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, etc). I've corrected most of the stuff but a couple of items are difficult to find and prohibitively expensive vs. the points received for judging.
