I just found a set of correct original 1958 big brake shoes...with the copper colored pads, made by Bendix, and still in the G.M. box. and the guy wants 5k for them. I know many of you out there probably think I am out of my mind but I just wanted to get some other opinions before I make the big plunge. Buy them or leave them???

I just paid 250.00 for a gas cap. If you got the money & want them for your car go for it.I now have 3 of the 4 gas caps pictured in the manual for my 58. I can't help it. I love my car. Keep in mind that the original dealer my car was delivered to was on NUTT ROAD !
In Phoenixville, PA & I live in Scottsdale, close enough ! LOL

I've heard that there are some other brake shoes (Oldsmobile?) that will work just fine. Perhaps someone else cn give you the specifics, but I just saw a 61 big brake car with these other shoes on a week ago...

Re: 1958 RPO 684 brake shoes
If you know them to be correct--your chances of finding others are extremely poor. Your checkbook needs to be on one side of your scale--your need for your vehicle to be absolutely perfect on the other side--which is most important to you?
I'm a guy who needs to know that the colors of the brake return springs inside the drums is absolutely the right color, and will have the paint made up and pay for that--but that's not in the $5k range.
I know, also, that you have already learned how to play the game to make some money at the hobby in order to feed the hobby---so consult your head and your heart, and then go with what you think is best!!
No matter what you do, someone will think you should have done it the other way--so do it for yourself.

Re: 1958 RPO 684 brake shoes
pat's correct. the 57 olds front shoes interchange with the c-1 rpo brakes but they won't be sintered metallic. for a driver or trailer queen, they'll work better than the metallic critters. I have them on my 61 big brake vette. NAPA will sell ya a bunch for 5K. regards, mike- Top
